Where does NO-BULL come from?
The Inspiration
Deeply rooted in the 1500s, Mexican culture has continued to evolve.
As part of this evolution, spirit animals called "Alebrijes" are part of the modern-Mexican culture flourishing from local artistry. These spirit animals are the core of the NO-BULL streetacos brand.
Alebrijes were brought to life by Pedro Linares (1906 - 1992), a humble man who made a living out of making art out of paper, cardboard, or anything he had access to with extremely limited resources in Mexico City.
Unexpectedly, Pedro became extremely ill with a worsening condition due to the limited resources to treat him. He fell into a deep coma: so deep the local doctors declared him deceased. During his funeral and with an open casket, he resumed to life and was surprised to wake up at his funeral.
Pedro then started to explain, as he started to step out of his casket, that he fell into a deep dream in which he walked in a tunnel forest following a light. But while walking, he started to hear odd noises and voices he had not heard before. Spooked and yet intrigued by the voices, he realized they were coming from animal-like creatures along his forest tunnel path. They were unlike anything Pedro had ever seen; they were composed of multiple and mixed animal parts that did not make sense in his waking life. These creatures continued to show up along his path as he walked towards the light, warning him that it was not his time to go yet. To turn back around and go back home. After these creatures' persistence with their warning messages, Pedro decided to turn around and start walking in the opposite direction until he woke up from this dream. Until then, Pedro realized these mystical creatures were his guides taking care of him and guiding him back home safely. He quickly became fascinated by the concept, and as an artist, decided to create a real-life representation of what he experienced and called them "Alebrijes."
Alebrijes were rapidly adopted by many other local artists making the same style figurines.
The premise behind these spirit animals is to make them as unique as the imagination will allow an artist to go. To allow creativity and imagination to be the only limit in place. Although Pedro was the creator of this concept and the first Alebrijes, his art has intrigued and inspired many globally. His art became the inspiration for many, NO-BULL streetacos included.
Alebrijes were born to free artists: to give them creative freedom and ownership of their lives. To break away from pre-judgment and stay true to their unique experience in this world. To not conform to others' expectations, live ones' truth in ones' way, let ones' authentic self freely be, and live life determined to actively trust oneself. These are sources of inspiration for many, and what NO-BULL stands for: making life one worth living, worth daring, worth dreaming, worth experiencing to the fullest extent.
